- In 1851 he was an employee of the 'Three Cups Inn' which still operates today. By 1871 he was a clerk and sexton of the Parish of Stockbridge. Later resigned and used a signature, not a mark. The signature was not as good as Richard Hulbert of Hinton Ampner in 1805.
